Five hours. Uphill. Both ways. Day 2 of Our Hinewai Adventure (Monday, July 11th)

After our first night at the lodge, everyone packed on the layers and readied themselves for the long hike. As our group trekked along the path, we saw breathtaking views of Hinewai Reserve, including a 600 year old Totara tree! It was amazing to see how the native plants were returning to the area without any real outside help other than mammal control. It was also incredible to see the return of the Tui, a native New Zealand bird with a pretty call. We got another treat when we learned that the stream water was clean enough to drink, allowing us to fill our bottles whenever they were empty.

After about three hours of hiking, we ate lunch, visited a farmer who fed the newly returned Tuis, and made our way down to the beach. Once we were there, the group went about searching for the beautiful Paua shells. Following the successful hunt, we hiked the steep trail back to a warm lodge and tasty dinner.

Cheers!
Katie
